Peru Pangoa Gesha
$24.00 – $112.00
This special lot comes from the community of Santiago de Oropel, in the province of Junin, in central Peru. We’ve purchased coffee from this community previously, but this is the first time we have encountered a community Gesha lot on offer. In most cases, Gesha comes from single estates or farms, where a producer has made an agricultural bet, growing this finicky and low-yielding varietal in order to realize higher market pricing. But as Gesha has become more widespread, and its propagation more common, the varietal seems to be popping up in more places than ever. All it takes is access to seed stock, and some time for trees to mature. And so here we have a community lot to which which numerous smallholders who have planted a few trees, but don’t have enough varietal coffee to process and sell on its own, pool their harvest to create a saleable lot.
If the volume of a $100 per pound Panamanian gesha is a 10, this example of the varietal probably sits at a 7. It’s very sweet and clean, with a pronounced but rounded acidity, along with mild white florals, mild tropical fruits and green tea. There’s also a little bit of the tannic coffee skin character that I associate with gesha itself. It’s a beautiful daily drinker that gives you a taste of what gesha has to offer.
Location: Pangoa, Junin, Peru
Elevation:Â 1800 MASL
Varietal: gesha
Process: washed, dried on raised beds and patios
