Ethiopia Duromina
$23.00 – $107.00
This washed coffee is certified organic and comes from Agaro, in the the western highlands of Jimma. Nano Challa is a subgroup of the Kata Muduga Cooperative Union, established in 2009 with assistance from an organization called TechnoServe and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. That might sound a little colonialist and creepy, but the loans and agronomical assistance the producers received for transitioning from commodity-grade coffee production to specialty has resulted in farmers receiving almost fifty percent more income from their coffee plants. And now, ten years later, Nano Challa is known industry wide for its pristine, super clean washed coffees; they also happen to be some of the first specialty lots to arrive in March (and sometimes even February). But this year, with all the shipping issues? August! And they were still some of the first high quality organics to arrive stateside. We were EXTREMELY fortunate to have contracted a fair amount of it this winter, before some of the more acute shipping issues began materializing. The result is that we’ve got some primo washed, organically-certified Ethiopia on-hand, even as we search for more coffee to last us through the winter.
The dry grounds show plenty of toasty sweetness, along with the promise of stonefruit and suggestion of fines herbs. But in the cup, the coffee really comes to life. The stonefruit no longer plays peek-a-boo, but steps out of the shadows to shake hands with your tongue. (Sorry for the weird body metaphor.) There’s a little thyme-like character accompanying the peach flavors, and it’s all supported by a sweet, sugar-browning base—think chocolate chip cookie. And it all comes together in a clean, lifted package that satisfies.
- Location: Agaro, Oromia, Jimma zone, Qadamessa woreda
- Elevation:Â 1850-2000 MASL
- Varietal: landrace and JARC varietals
- Process: washed, dried on raised beds
