This microlot comes from the 4 hectare farm of Valdemir Oliviera dos Reis. For the past seven years, HNRS do Brazil–a non-profit division of the global coffee giant Neumann–has held a competition under the name of Forca Cafe, to call attention to, and provide quality and pricing incentives for, small producers in the Minas Gerais region. This year, Valdemir’s farm took first place, and this is the microlot that won.
It is a naturally-processed red catuai lot, and is at once extremely cozy and comfortable, while also being exceptionally complex. As a naturally-processed coffee, it has good body and a variety of subtle fruit flavors. These are not East African in character, mind you–Brazils are a different animal. Rather, they are muted and soft, moving from blueberry and strawberry, to canteloupe and dried peach, accompanying light chocolate and soft nut tones. There is also a fair amount of acidity for a Brazil.
One other way to think about it: as a single-origin version of Bird Dog!
